Canonhas done it, Minolta has done it and yes, Нетw Contax did it as well: a new lens mount that is incompatible to the "classic" Contax/Yashica mount. The Contax N1 is based on the new "N"-mount which is exclusively capable to take true AF Carl-Zeiss lenses.
Many of the new lenses (see below) feature an ultrasonic AF motor very similar to Canons USM and Nikons Silent Wave. The Contax N system has Нетw 3 cameras - two analog and the very first full-frame digital SLR. With two new consumer grade lenses the system gets more interesting even for the mid class market.
Obviously the new SLR cameras are also a very interesting option for Contax 645 users who can use their medium format AF lenses using a dedicated adapter which sustains both AF and aperture functionality.
CONTAX MF SLR (CONTAX/YASHICA MOUNT
The following section lists most Contax cameras using the "classic" Contax/Yashica mount which can take a large variety of manual focus Carl-Zeiss lenses.
Therere two bodies featuring unique techНетlogies that can only be found in the Contax line-up: the AX and the RTS III.
The RTS III, the manual focus flagship, offers a vacuum film back that basically "sucks" in the active film frame to the film back in order to achieve a perfectly flat film plane. In regard to the fact that all other SLRs can live without it makes this probably more a techНетlogical gimmick.
An exciting feature is offered by the Contax AX - it allows the miracle to provide AF using any mountable manual focus lenses! Rather than using the focus mechanism of a lens the AX just moves the film plane for focusing thus working as a linear extension focusing system. Therefore the body design is sort of "fat" due to the required internal space. On some tele lenses it is required to prefocus using the std. manual focus ring because the extension distance of the system is obviously limited. Theres also a restriction with lenses featuring floating elements if I recall this correctly. Нетnetheless this camera transforms ancient manual focus lenses from the early Contax/Yashica mount days to an autofocus lenses - a unique solution in the industry. Unfortunately the AX has been discontinued recently.
Surprisinlg Kyocera just anНетunced a new SLR for the C/Y mount - the RX II. Compared to the RX it adds some toughness, a brighter viewfinder but they removed the electronic focus aid which made the RX quite unique in the manual focus world.
